Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Fox River Youth Ensemble?
The Fox River Youth Ensemble is a concert band for home schooled students. There are two sections of the band; one for beginners and one for experienced/returning students.
What instruments are in a concert band?
flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion
What age should a child be to play a band instrument?
Children generally begin band instruments around ages 10-13, although other ages can be accommodated depending on student interest, ability, and size. Younger children may be more limited in instrument choice because they are physically unable to hold certain instruments.
How do we get started?
1.) Contact Mrs. Remus to set up an appointment to try instruments. Even if your child is certain they want to play a certain instrument, it is a good idea to try it first.
2.) After choosing an instrument, sign up for summer beginner lessons.
3.) Check out Breber Music or another music store for affordable rental options/lesson book purchase. Parents using Breber Music may just inform Breber staff that their child is participating in the Fox River Youth Ensemble, and Breber staff will help you get the correct items.
When are band rehearsals/lessons?
Band rehearsals are held on Monday afternoons during the school year, September 9-May 5. Beginners rehearse at 3 p.m. and returning/experienced students rehearse at 4 p.m. Group lessons are scheduled at different times later in the week. All rehearsals/lessons are held at the Remus home.
How much does it cost?
Participation in the Fox River Youth Ensemble is $40/month. This generally includes 3 or more rehearsals and 3 or more group lessons per month, as well as the loan of a band uniform polo shirt and the loan of any band music we may play. It does not include private lessons, book, music stand, instrument, or reeds.
